So we worked together for several weeks on building and scaling the CRM process. Their existing newsletter marketing on Mailchimp was to be replaced by more targeted measures to reach customers in a more personalized way and to have a tool that could scale with future growth. The main joint goal: migrating from Mailchimp to Klaviyo.

Advantages of Klaviyo over Mailchimp

Deep integration with Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, and many more shop systems

While Mailchimp shut down its Shopify integration in 2019, Klaviyo is all about strong integrations with a wide range of systems. Within minutes you can connect all the relevant shop data. That way you can see exactly how much revenue a specific email campaign generated. You can also track when someone started checkout, placed an order, or returned a product.

Fixed pricing and no extra costs

Klaviyo uses a transparent pricing model based on the number of contacts. Services like a dedicated IP, back-in-stock automations, back-in-stock feature, and signup forms come at no additional cost.

Advanced segmentation

Only want to contact users who have never placed an order? Or let all users who bought red jeans last week know their delivery is delayed? No problem with Klaviyo. Its segment feature lets you personalize email automations and campaigns more heavily. This also works with standard targeting options like website activity, order activity, or activity in external tools like Typeform or Gorgias.

No list management — customer profiles instead

While Mailchimp relies purely on list structure, Klaviyo works with customer profiles. A user in Klaviyo can belong to multiple lists and segments at the same time. On top of that, all their data (orders, activity, custom properties, predicted analytics) is visualized directly on the customer profile. That makes it far easier to scale CRM activities and work across areas without losing overview.

Signup forms directly in Klaviyo

Pop-ups, flyouts, and embedded forms can be designed and served directly from Klaviyo. That saves costs on additional opt-in tools and gives you a direct integration with Klaviyo. If you serve a coupon through a pop-up, for example, you can send it personalized in a follow-up email directly from Klaviyo.

Migration from Mailchimp to Klaviyo

Migrating CRM tools should be well thought through — and, more importantly, carefully planned — so that the switch happens without pausing email sends (and losing revenue in the process).

Klaviyo has a Mailchimp integration that pushes data directly into Klaviyo. In preparation, we already set up the pre-purchase flows in Klaviyo. We then ran both tools in parallel for a few weeks. That way we could slowly warm up the Klaviyo account while still sending campaigns from Mailchimp, before fully switching over.

What exactly did we do?

After signing up via a signup form, customers are welcomed with a dedicated welcome flow.

Abandoned Cart

When customers abandon checkout, they receive an email to help them complete their order.

Browse Abandonment Flow

When customers have viewed a specific product, we can surface that exact product again in a targeted email.

When customers have been inactive for a while, we try to reactivate them with a winback automation.
